Prior Lake residents Jack and Bev VonFeldt celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with family and friends.

Faith, commitment are foundation of couple’s 70 years together

A spunky 17-year-old celebrating her birthday with friends at the Casa Loma Ballroom in St. Louis, Mo., had no idea how fate-filled that evening in 1955 would become after meeting one very handsome serviceman.

As the young, newly-introduced couple danced to the tunes being performed by Bill Haley and the Comets, Jack VonFeldt, then 18, knew that night he wanted to get to know Beverly Balmer much better. So much so, he drove 40 miles on a regular basis from the military base where he was stationed to Arnold, Mo., where she lived.

It didn't take long for Jack to pop the question, and on June 23, 1956, they were married in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Arnold. The rings they exchanged during the ceremony are engraved with "Faithful to God and each other."
